Getting around port blockings on local router
My friend has MAC OS X 10.2. And his parents has blocked ports 1-65535 and locked him out of the router.
How can we get him around this? He needs to get on the net for school.
Recompiling his kernel, or running a custom one, is out of the question because the mac developer tools did not install correctly.
He has a dlink 624 router.
Any help would be appreciated.
Though I doubt the validity of this cause, all routers have hardware resets available. Generally, there will be a pin sized hole that contains a button that you must press and hold for ~10 seconds or until the status lights on the router flash. This will also delete all settings and flash updates installed on the router - if you do not know what you are doing it may be difficult to get everything working again.
Just reset the router and reconfigure it. Resetting should give you a default password, and more importantly unblock the ports. There is usually a button on the router that you need a pointy object to press to do the reset.
Does he have DSL? If so you need to find the username and password from the information they give you when configuring the router.
EDIT: I'm slow at typing...

..Those damn parents, always getting in the way of education.
You could try the default password 'admin', but I'm sure if they're smart enough to block ports they're smart enough to change a password.
There should button or something on it to reset it's memory, and then you can get in with the default password, but then you'll need the account and password for the ISP.
In theory port 0 could be used, but 0 normally means 'pick any unused port', so you'd need to put the packets together yourself. Too much work.

what he can do is override his mac address and that will work (assuming that his parents blocked ONLY his current address) along with the MAC address change, the IP addr should also be changed
resetting the router will only enrage his parents, so some of the other things he can do are:
-set up a keysnoop on his parents computer and hope they log into the router
-if he has 2 network ports, he can sniff out the password using ethereal or tcpdump
-ask his parents to allow him, if they trust him
-get his fat overweight american ass outside the house!!!!!

You're all going about this the wrong way.
What he should do is tell them he need access to the net for school work and insist they sit with him whilst he does it "to make sure he he's not goofing off". Two hours of their time a night for a couple of weeks and they'll soon relent. [smile]
