combing batching on material basis and culling questions

Hi, I am currently batching my scene on a material basis. Now I am trying to do culling but I am getting into a dilemna. On culling how would I point to the right faces and the right material plus be able to make use of vertex arrays and VBO. One thing I have thought of is to have octrees or bounding boxes on a per material basis. I am not sure how feasible this is. Any one have any thoughts on how to achive this. Thanks.
