hi I've heard quite a bit about glsl and it sounds really interesting. Does anyone know how many cards have the right drivers/caps? Are most new cards now coming out with decent glsl caps? cheers

My geforce fx works with glsl.
Any GeForce FX supports glsl (although the cheapers ones are pretty slow with it, obviously). For ATi I think you're aiming at 9700 and above.

FX cards are the cheapest route ('bout £40 for the lowest)
All of the cards in this list support the GL_ARB_shading_language_100 extension (The GLSL one). I would personally choose a Radeon 9600/9800 over a GeForce FX. The GF6 series could also be a good choice, they support SM 3.0 (which is DX terminology BTW) which gives you some more options (with things like texture lookups in vertex shaders).
GLSL is supported all the way down to GeForce2? That's the first time I hear that. I thought it was only supporten in GFX5200 and above.

-EDIT: Ah, but it supports only vertex shaders... That makes sense.
