Hi. I want to make "shafts of light", streaming from the sky in my rts. What is a nice-looking and simple technique for doing this ? Is it a good idea to just do a textured quad from the sky and down to the ground, and let it go from opaque to translucent, and normalize it to the camera ? Or anyone has a better idea ?

It would be a better idea to use additive blending for shafts of light. Other than that, you can use either billboard quads, or plain old light cylinders (as in Warcraft 3, for instance).
Ahh it was the warcraft-3 effect I was thinking of. Never heard of "plain old light cylinders" though ;)
I guess it's just what it soundls like... a cylinder made up from textured quads ?

Just a transparent cylinder mesh with a 1D ramp texture applied. Ramp as in black to gray to white color from 0 to 255, or whatever color you choose, say blue my favorite. :)
