basic
hi, i want to learn how to program.
I know a little of tibasic(a language for my calculator) it is similar to basic, at least i am told.
So whe ncomming to the pc, i started looking at basic, becasue it is simple.
I found freebasic. and read a few articles.
1st question. Is freebasic the same as visual basic
2nd i want to learn with online tutorilas at the moment, i might buy a book later. Do you know of any online resorces that can help me. Is it worth me just going strait to c
Well, I don't know any of basic, but IMHO you should drop that, and start with C, it's not a dificult language and it is one of the best out there..., then, you can move up to..., say C++/Java or something like C#, depending on your needs....
Well, hope I could help....
Good luck!

can u give me a website that has desent tutorilas and info. like a said i mihgt get a book later, but i want to sure on a language first
First think about what you want: A difficult language that more powerfull, or an easy to learn language that is a bit limited.
Visual Basic is a good choice if you want a language that you can learn in a months, but it won't offer you very much. You cannot (or atleast not easy) create 3D games with VB, or big games. VB is ment for small games and applications.
You can use C++, a more powerfull language used by commercial developers to create games (C++ is an imporved version of C). But C++ is also harder to learn and it will probably cost you a year before you can even create a simple tetris game.
Other populair langiages: Java, Python (less populair but still used quite often) etc.
You should start reading some tutorials about each langiage before you make a choice. The worse thing you can do is learning a language that you don't like so you need to swtich later.
You can use google for to find tutorials for the langiages. When you want to use C++ you can go to http://www.bloodshed.net for a free IDE (+compiler) to compile your programs. For VB/java etc. I have no idea.
I used this tutorial: http://www.cplusplus.com/doc/tutorial/
It teaches you the basics of C++, you should try it out.
Good luck with programming!

Nothing like Visual Basic. Visual basic, well is visual. That and it is meant for Win32 programming for the most part. It's a RAD(Rappid Application Development) tool that supports a drag and drop interface for making GUI's, you simplky drag over the components then add in the code, this saving you a lot of time.

A lot of people say that learning C/C++ is not the best thing to do right away. The main suggestion is to go with a programming language that will teach you good programming skills. So its up to you to see if you want to just dive right into the complex C/C++ or perhaps take others advice and use a language such as Python or Java to start out with.
Regardless of what language you choose, search [google] for all the information you are looking for. There was this one site, GL4Basis that let you do OpenGL programmign with Basic, but that site is down right now and I don't know if it'll be up again... So you can periodically check back there. Good luck!
i dont expect to do 3d games, not until a few years from now. I wanted basic becasue it is basic.
Is freebasic and qbasic and visual basic all the same.
anyone have a tutorial for free basic
visual basic you have to pay for right
I will read tutorial and try the basics, of a few languages then deside

My 2 cents worth here, to start out with, just pick a language that makes sense to you. The biggest part of learning to program isn't learning a language, it's learning how to "think in computer" (for lack of a better term due to a vocabulary deficiency, or perhaps too little sleep). Learning how to solve a problem in a way that's easy for a computer. Once you've got programming down, then learn whatever languages you want. Being a good programmer doesn't depend on your language of choice.

I am not, nor have I ever claimed to be a good programmer. I'm lazy, I hack apart others' code and it hasn't been until recently that I've actually put real effort into becoming proficient.

You don't need to pay for VB, you need to pay for the Microsoft Visual Basic IDE/compiler.
You can also use a free IDE/compiler, for example Envelop: http://www.freebyte.com/programming/compilers/envelop.html
(I never tried this compiler so I don't know if this one is good)
I would suggest to use VB rather than learning Basic but that's just a matter of opinion. The reason for this is because VB has a much better documentation and the cummunity is much bigger. If you have questions for VB you can ask millions of people. To get an answer for a Basic question you will need to search better.
Some VB tutorial sites:
http://webspace.dialnet.com/paul_pbcoms/vb/tutor.html
http://www.xploiter.com/mirrors/vbtut/
http://markbutler.8m.com/vb-tutorial.htm
Don't listen to what other people say but found out yourself which is the best language for you! It's just a matter of opinion so again try to download a free compiler for different programming languages and download some free tutorials and start working with them. After you tried them all you can choose yourself! It will cost you some time to follow some beginners lessions of each populair langiage but whats a few hours in the world of programming? It will cost you alot of time before you mastered a language so you can better make the right decisiion before you start programming.
Again, some populair languages you should check out:
- C/C++
- Visual Basic (VB)
- Java
- Python

The beta for visual basic 2005 is free (probably time bombed, but for learning purposes shouldn't matter)
it isn't the same thing as tibasic, but some of the syntax might be similar. I do believe that the start page when you open visual basic has a tutorial on learning how to program.
Good luck :)
