How expensive is using the Stencil Buffer. I just finished making a little demo with a 3D model running across a slick(read : reflective) floor and when I just render the model and floor(without reflection), it runs great. However, whenever I enable reflection, the framerate drops dramatically, but when I dont use the stencil buffer and I just draw the inverted model, the framerate stays the same. Any insight to why this is happening?

you are having to do an extra per-fragment operation each frame, as such its going to require more GPU resources than a simple model render.

What do you mean by 'drops dramatically'? and what card do you have?

try glPrintf( "%s\n", glGetString( GL_VENDOR ) );
perhaps u have software
set the window to 32bit color and 24bit depth + 8 bit stencil (also the desktop to 24/32bitcolor)
