css/edge demonstrates some nice techniques you may be interested in a quick look at.

Make sure your site is usable above anything else - people should be able to quickly locate whatever information they're after - this also means that you need to have enough content to draw people in, keep them there for a while, and hopefully get them to come back.

As far as usable and aesthetically pleasing go, phpMyAdmin (not their site, but the theme of their application) is pretty good, but it's really a web application and not a website. I second the vote for CSS Zen Garden.
