Compiling DirectX 9.0

Ok, I already read the FAQ that MSVC++ 6.0 is not support, but some projects do compile, provided that you have the Microsoft Platform SDK February 2003 Edition installed. Anyone who has the April 2005 SDK, I'm getting missing _wtof() compilation errors. All of my include paths are correct, and do I have UNICODE defined. Has anyone encountered this problem? Maybe _wtof is only available for 64-bit platforms? Don't tell me I have to go out and buy a brand new computer to use it? :)
