How to display non-alphanumeric characters in opengl?

I'm using NeHe's glPrint("hello number %3.2f", i) to print fonts in OpenGL. I was wondering how would I print characters from the ANSI character set which aren't on my keyboard? I really need to be able to print a small triangle, as in delta x, is that in the character set? If so, how do I use it? Thanks for your help.

If you use a "normal" (rather than two-font) texture map, and you want just an extra charcter or two, you could replace an unused charcter in the texture with your symbol and use an escape sequence in your string to identify the charcter.

I don't know of a good way to get a full, unicode font going.
