i saw a thread last night talking about how BSPs are getting kinda old and dont need to be used for todays games as much. so what is the best method for sorting? ive seen portal rendering used in doom3 but what does unreal use? im looking for techniques to use in a FPS.

i suggest some sort of PVS

not the compiler generated PVS, but handplaced PVS

in my engine project which includes its own editor i give the mapper the possibility to place convex brushes and merge several of them together to volume

with a texture you can specify a if a side of a brush is a portal

that way you can create indoor and outdoor maps pretty easy and connecting several pvs can be done on a precomputing step

if you need more infos mail me at its a pretty complex concept

when you talk about hand placed PVS portals are they similar to the brushes used in unrealed to divide areas up such as hallways and indoor/outdoor environments?

heh ive tried researching compile time PVS structures but it makes no sense to me.
