Mandrake is the macdonals of the linux world.
I hear Mandrake/Mandriva isn't all that great. I know people who've used it. Sure, it's got a great, idiot-proof way of doing things, but apparently you have to pay to join the Mandrake club before you can get a full update package? If you don't pay, you have to wait ages for the RPM's and download/install everything manually, or so I'm told.

People say that Mandrake/Mandriva and Red Hat are currently battling it out to become the Microsoft of the Linux world, closing their code and charging more and more money.
I have had infinite free updates with Mandrake 10.1. I haven't heard anything about having to pay for them.

Yes, Man[drake/driva] iso images (dvd & cdrom) are available for free from various FTP mirrors around the world, as are the updates.
