help with software

Blender is a free 3D modeller. It's pretty good, but the interface takes some getting used to (google for tutorials).
Wings3D and Anim8or are other free 3D modellers. Don't know much about them.

The GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a pretty good free paint program.

For painting, you could use GIMP:
It's free and fairly advanced, though it may be more complex than what you want.

Not sure exactly what you mean by "3D programs", but Maya has a learning edition which is free (for learning purposes at least).
