(dx8) the only function I use from the d3dx package is D3DXCreateTextureFromFileEx that is used for loading a *.dds file. Now I have a 400k static linkage overhead for only one function and for me it's a price too high. There is a simple alternative to load *.dds without the ms package? Something small and quick (I work ONLY with dds, I do not want bmp/jpg/gif/blah support)

If I'm correct C and C++ linkers only link what is actually used so don't bother. If even linking only said function gives you to much overhead, you are out of luck. The programmers of D3DX did not make a separation for you so it is all or nothing (you cannot strip parts of the exposed function).
