glRasterPos is not working properly

Hello, I've been trying to render some bitmap-type text to the screen using glRasterPos2f. When i call this function i get an Invail Operation exception trown. I insterted: _control87(MCW_EM,MCW_EM); and the exception was gone but the text will still not appear. I did a little investagating and discovered that after calling glRasterPos2f(0.05f,0.05f), calling glGetFloatv to get the current raster position i got: {0,0,0,1} I dont think that's what it is supposed to be. I am using Borland C++ Builder 5.0 with a GeForce 2 graphics card. Thanks in advance, Mike
