recording movie in DirectX

there're programs which record movies from the applications, like fraps, how is this done in dx? do they use directshow? or they just capture multiple pictures and make the film by integrating them togheter? basically, how do they work on other programs? i.e. how can I write some text on another DX app? thanks

When an DirectX application renders, it creates a surface where it stores the output of the last renderpass. The present function is the function who shows the surface with the output.

If you save the output surface into a bitmap array, you get a movie. This is a way to do it. You can also use the GDI+ way to make an screencapture every 1/30 seconds and store that.
