Another 3D question

Ok I think I have this almost solved. I am beginning to program in 3D and I am kind of puzzled. My question is, if I create a model in maya do I have to use the animation features in that program, or could I just create the model and code the animation in C++. I am mind boggled because at this time I am creating a basic model in maya and it is going over the animation, but when it is exported to an engine doesn't it export as a still image. Sh8key

don't know all the details of Maya 3D file format, but it all depends on the file loader you are using. If your file loader is able to load all the animation data (keyframe or skeletal), then your 3D engine has to know how to interpret the data not only about the mesh nut also about the animation. But usually (unless you're using a good 3D engine) you have to do it yourself. Load the mesh only and do the animation in your code is another way to go, however i wouldn't recommend that..
Are you planing to make your own Maya file loader?
