Yes.

The only considerations you will need to make are the resolutions of your alpha map and how you want to divy it up between different quads.

For example, depending on your needs, you may want to have an alpha map for a depth of one within the tree resulting in 4 maps. Blending between the alpha maps, or the different quads should not be a problem, clearly, as you know the adjacent alpha maps.

There are many considerations for texture splatting in general (ie Number of textures desired), but really just depend on the results your looking for.

This does indeed help a little bit.

See I've never done texture splatting but I have created a very nice and quick QuadTree which allows very simple frustum culling to take place.

Before I venture out and do texture splatting I wan't to see if my current culling method would still hold.
