platform independent stream to nothing

whats the platform independent equivalent of opening an ostream to /dev/null?
ostream *out;

#ifndef ENABLE_LOGGING
        out = new ofstream("/dev/null");
#endif

By not giving the ostream object a stream buffer - that is, giving a null pointer to the appropriate constructor. This has the effect of setting the badbit, so nothing gets written as long as the stream doesn't have a streambuf. This is probably faster than outputting to an OS bit bucket, because no formatting or buffering will be done.

std::ostream *log = new ostream(0);


BTW, you can also temporarily disable output in a similar manner, by setting the streambuf to null via a call to rdbuf().
