Not sure if this is the best place A basic render should be able to render triangle strip, list and fans right? When I create a 3D model in 3D Studio -> How can I divide the model into strips/lists/fans? OR will the .X plugin do it for me (PandaDXExport or Quest3D ..) and store the figure in strips/lists/fans? My guess is that it would be up to the exporter to optimise a mesh right? I would certainly not think optimising mesh in realtime is favourably...

Not necessarily. Often times lists are just fine.

I think too the exporter is the best place, also because this is where you convert from some existing format (3D Studio Max) to your own format (in-game mesh format or in your case X). I'm not sure what the Panda exporter does here, but I do know that 3DSMax has quite a different mesh setup than is common in realtime 3D graphics. So either way some conversions need to be made.
