really fast terrain shadow casting

I've noticed that when using FarCry's Sandbox editor it computes the shadows that the terrain "casts" very quickly in the preview dialog box. It updates itself realtime as you change the direction of the light. I have implemented the "Fast Computation Of Terrain Shadow Maps" method that is posted over at flipcode, but I was wondering if anyone knew of any optimizations or ways to speed up the process, maybe caching data or something. Any ideas on how Farcry's editor does it so quickly?

hi, I never looked at FarCry's editor (except the usual screenshots) but couldn't it simply be a shadow mapping pass ? It'd be enough for a preview of the shadows, and fast enough for real time ...
