I want to start a publishing company over the net people can buy and download that the company owns can you give me some tips on how to start out

start out by talking to a few indi developers. Who might have erlier titles. And Try to get them. As well as a deal on their next release. But you need to have come cash to buy licenses to indi games and such.

1) Create a decent website with targeted traffic

2) Contact several indie game developers and ask them if they would be interested in your publishing deal.
(Make this deal non-exclusive if possible).

a) Check local laws about commerce AND ecommerce. (CRITICAL; ~ 1 week)
b) Create a Business plan outlineing Target Market, Competition, Pricing, Strategy, etc. (CRITICAL; ~2-4 weeks)
c) Use your Business Plan as a basis to attract investors and money (~2 months)
d)Create contracts and all other documents necessary for development.(~1 wk)
e) Create a team to develop the resources for you or engage in outsourcing.(~1 month)
e) Wait while all the above comes together and your team creates your resources (~3-9 months)

f) Contact and buy into an ISP that offers ecommerce solution (good storage; max bandwidth)(~a few days)
g) Create a Website that best and uniquely identifies your product and your offerings (~one month)
h) Engage in a Marketing and Advertising Blitz
i) Open Shop!!!!
j) Track all sales
k) Adjust your products, placement, advertising, marketing, etc to better meet your customers needs.

I'm so glad somebody else is interested in publishing also. I want to publish my own game(s). I've been doing tons of research in the past few hours and found out TONS of information about CD/DVD publishing. Basically if you have enough money to start up a company (about $25,000) you can pull it off. Here are the basics of what you need.

-CD Duplicator
-CD Printer
-CD Packager
-Blank CDs
-Cases

You can produce each unit for approximately less than $1. Sell it for $20 and thats a $19 profit on each game you sell. You just need the startup money, man hours, case/label design and your set. You can start your own publishing company. After you start making the CDs you have to advertise, and talk to retailers about them selling your product and how much of a percentage they want. I would say it's would be worth it to start you own publishing company to publish your video game. Only $25,000! The equipment will pay for itself many times over. From what I here, publishers give you a very small percentage of royalties anyway, so why not have a publishing company to do it for yourself. You could even do work for other people. It's mostly automated, and you could charge big $$$.

1. You forgot marketing which is a much larger cost than any of the above.
2. Unless you can find free games to sell then you won't be making $19 profit. Games cost money to make (or buy from whoever made them)

He asked for tips to start and I gave him what I thought would be a good idea. As for marketing, I mentioned advertising. He didn't say he was developing games, just publishing them.

To publish games you need to market them which is more than just advertising, otherwise people wont know they are are there. You also need the games in the first place before you can sell them. You either have to develop them yourself (which costs time/money) or get them from a developer who is likely to want money in return - hence you wont be making $19 profit per unit.
