OpenGL Terrain Generation

I was wondering how would i go about creating a program that well randomly generate beautiful hills, valleys, rivers, and islands, on the fly? Everytime i create mountains, it has an annoying peak, that is so to a point. Some of the mountains are okay with peaks, but not all of them. If you can help me, anyway possible i would be grateful. Also......if you know any C++-OpenGl tutorials you can throw a site out at me that has no relation with NEhes, thanks.
