Are BBSes extinct?
I was trying to conceive of a distribution plan for a game I'm working on, and I was wondering if I could count on uploading to BBSes. Do these beasts still exist? Can you still telnet to places and get ANSI screens and recalcitrant adolescent verbal repartee? If they do still exist, do they represent a viable distribution channel, or are they too scarce?

While I'm sure there are probably still some BBSes kicking around, I wouldn't count on them for any widespread distribution. You'd be better off finding some hosting and distributing it that way.
I thought you had to dial up to BBSes? I used to use them 10 years ago for some stuff, but they all had different content and my connection to them was like 9600 bps. I think you would be better off putting a torrent on your home computer and having the people downloading your content and sharing it (if it is something popular like linux distributions it is a good method).
Do BBSes, as in, dial a 28.8k modem to someone's house?
BBSes do infact exist even to this day, although they're no longer as popular as they once were. You'd be hard pressed to find one that doesn't specialize in pr0n, warez or door games.
I wouldn't count on them for any sort of hardcore distribution.

They exist. They're probably not good distribution channels (unless they come with web space, like Freeshell). I doubt many dial-up boards are still around, though.
Based on the language you just used in your original post, I can firmly inform you that you are too intelligent for BBSes, and would probably be rejected.
That is, unless they've become seriously more intelligent than they were 12 years ago...

There are still plenty of MUDs, MUSHes, and talkers around, but most of them are games or chat rooms and feature no upload capability.
