aside from PANDA exporter for 3DS max ? is there any other good .X Mesh exporter available for 3DS?

Okino is the best .X file exporter... we use it for exporting from Maya but it supports Max as well.

$395.00 is pretty steep for the price though ....

Actually it's not, its the best possible .X file exporter there is and has tons of functionality. Obviously this is a serious exporter though and is not freeware, sorry for not stating that. Considering how long it would take to write that codebase you are saving thousands.
