I am creating some textures during initialization using this LockRect on the texture surface and it seems REALLY slow. Is it just my code, or is this known to be a slow function? Anyone know why it is so slow? What can be done to speed it up? Thanks all

It is very slow because you need to load that chunk back into main memory from the GPU which can take 1000's of CPU ticks. You should avoid locking surfaces as much as possible.
