Photoshop (2D), 3DSMax and Maya (3D) are some of the most popular. You're looking at paying a helluva lot for commercial versions of any of these though :p
Thanks Tim, I will look into this. I have been learning C++ and VB at college but still would like to get my hands on the graphics side of things...
If you want to use free alternatives to these commercial software, you can have a look to The Gimp (2D) and blender (3D).

IF you want to stick to these dinosaurs, you can download free limited personnal versions of both Maya (it is called Maya PLE) and 3DSMax (gmax).

HTH,
Great stuff. Thanks for the links Emmanuel ill have a look.
Many game developers (ex Relic) have made a drastic switch to using Maya models in their games. It may be the next thing in 3D modeling in game development. Anyone know what Half-Life 2 uses?

Softimage XSI from Alias is used in Half-Life 2 and CounterStrike:Source :)
Hope I was helpful. And thank you if you were!
