explosions

hi everybody I'm looking forward to some great explosions, specially samples done using shaders, where can I find something and what's really the best way to implement them? using a highly-customizable particle system? or something else... thanks www.galaxyroad.com

I think the best way is using sprites and them plasma rings that you see in most MMORPG when casting spells and stuff.
If you make a few billboarded quads with animated (or not) explosions on them and as they fade out, make them slowly turn with a random velocity, it looks rather nice.

To see that in action, play Quake3 and fire the rocket launcher on a nice big map. Check how the smoke from the back sorta turns and fades as do the explosions when the rocket hits.
