Pardon the simple question - I'm new to DirectX in general. I have an application which renders in D3D8, and I need to render a GUI on top of that in a seperate thread. What's the best way to go about this? DirectDraw somehow? Another D3D device?

Frankly, the best way to go about this is to not render it in a seperate thread. You can possibly run some of your GUI stuff in a seperate thread, such as receiving keyboard/mouse input, but the actual updating/rendering of the graphical elements should be in the same thread as all of your other rendering. Otherwise, you're just asking for excessively large headaches. Headaches that will exceed those that might be caused by a redesign into a single render thread.

First, thank you for the quick response :). Ideally I would avoid this, but the gui will display things that will hault the main game thread [namely a VM debugger]. While I may get away with doing this another way, I probably won't, and might as well investigate how I'd go about this now :/.
