Is anyone familiar with the game "Football squares"? I'm creating a version of it, and I'm confused by the mathematical probabilities of it. Basically, there are 100 squares, and the chances of any given square winning are equal. Thus, the probability of winning on one square is 1/100. However, I think there is a strategy to it. For instance, if you choose a certain formation, I think you have an advantage. So, the question is... let's say you choose N squares. Is the probability of winning N/100? Or is it different? It must be different if certain formations give an advantage, but how can it be different? Mike C. http://www.coolgroups.com/

I'm not too sure about the game but couldn't you assign each square a different value to indicate the advantage that square gives you, i.e. not all sqaures would have the same value (N/100). Then calculate the total advantage of the formation based on the sum of the values of each square that the individual players were on +/- some other factors?

Certain formations only have an advatnage if you know what numbers are on the columns.

If you do NOT know the numbers ahead of time (which you don't usually), then there is NO advantage to certain patterns.

Because it only matters what numbers you get.

The most common scores in Football include the numbers 0,7,3.

So, if you choose every square in a column and one of those three numbers appears for the header of that column, then you have a good chance of winning, but if 2 was to show up (generally regarded as the worst number possible), then your formation ends up being a total bust.

I think this page suggests formations do matter:

but I'm not really sure.

If it is in fact true that formations don't matter, then the game requires no skill. That doesn't seem like much fun.
