I've been searching the web for some sound effects but can't find the way to describe what I want for search engines... I want a kind of 'whumming' sound for a hovering thing in the game - sort of pulsing like a flying saucer might do. I want some kind of noise to announce that this thing has teleported in/out. Can anyone suggest how to phrase this, or where I might look?

Try in Help Wanted section, there might be one sound engineer able to help you.

Just Google for 'Free Sci-Fi sound effects' or Alien sound effects or Space sound effects, or just sound effects. If you want half decent royalty free sound effects you're not probably not gonna find one big website with everything you want on it. Google showed up this site which has some sci-fi type stuff on you may be able to use.

Downloading Audacity would be a good idea. It's an open source sound editor. You can use it to alter sounds you download and create some new ones. Just play around with various effects and see what they do. You shouldn't find it too hard to use it to alter and create some basic SFX.

I maintain this sticky thread in the Music and Sound forum. Were you looking to pay for sounds, or for free SFX?

If you're willing to pay, you might be interested in something like the IndieSFX Collection, the SoundMATTER FPS Pack or Arcade Pack, although I'm sure there are plenty of other collections which may potentially also have suitable sounds.

As for free sounds, I'll leave it up to you to look through the listed sites if thats what you're after - don't forget to check the licences on any sounds you download though.

Try www.3dcafe.com

Is it just me, or do you have to pay for all the stuff at 3D Cafe now? :(
