transparency using other colours...

I''ve loaded in a texture to my nifty little proggie and this texture has an alpha channel. I''ve even written to the alpha channel, and told the texture where the alpha bits were and where the alpha bits weren''t. I was hoping that by taking this and saying, look, this is my alpha channel, it would be transparent no matter what... But it''s not for a very obvious reason, the places that I wrote to the alpha channel were white, hence the alpha channel in those places would be opaque when converted. So, here''s the question. Does anyone know a way to specify what is supposed to be transparent, and what is not without putting black for those areas of the image? S.
