Terrain Rendering - Looking for Pointers

Hi, For my final year project at university I will be writing a paper on different ways to store, render and improve the performance of terrain rendering and atmospehric effects (rain, wind sun glare etc). (Including looking at existing methods) I was just wondering what do you think are the good books \ articles that I should read to help me with the research that I will require to do this? Thanks in advance.

Terrain rendering is a fairly active research area of its own. Notable "things" include trees of various sorts (quadtrees in particular), ROAM (2), BDAM, Geomipmaps, Geoclipmaps, Chunked LOD (CLOD), and more.
