Stencil shadow volumes that fade out

i'm using nehe's code to create stencil shadow volumes. i'd like to advance that code now so that the shadows fade out the more they are "stretched"... e.g.: http://doom3.com/images/screenshots/01.jpg (the left spider's shadow) can someone give me a hint how to do this? nehe's code just uses one quad covering the entire screen which is then rendered in the stencil area.. so it wont work this way..?

the shadow is a solid plane that extends indefinitely. the semi-soft shadowing comes from the attenuated light within the train.
