How to obtain a surface in a flip chain

In Direct3D version 9 (for 2D purposes), there is only one way I am currently aware of that will allow you to copy surface to surface using a color key, and that is via the D3DXLoadSurfaceFromSurface() function. I would rather create my own which I'm sure would be faster, but I will await suggestions on this before I try (need the most performance possible). This function requires a pointer to a surface destination to receive the blitter data. In my flip chain I have 1 back buffer, which means there are only 2 surfaces in the flip chain. I need to obtain the top most or earliest modified surface in the flip chain to blitter to. This would be the next surface ready to be moved to primary and display position. I read through the documentation but I never found any functions which give you a pointer to the surface I need. Would someone mind helping me out with this? Thank you ahead of time!
