Square pegs play in Square Holes
I haven't actually played it, but from what I've heard, Kingdom Hearts, Chain of Memories used a system whereby the player used "cards" to determine what lay beyond each door as it opened. This seems to relate to the tile system.
I like the idea. To keep gameplay somewhat balanced, a change to one attribute would need to have an effect on all the remaining. Just in different proportions. That way a world would be completely stacked to one situation but would still be customizable to benefit the player.
