Finding inside/outside zones of an arbitrary mesh...

How can I group an arbitrary mesh's triangles like inside and outside? Suppose I have a house modelled in a 3D modelling program like 3DMax or Lightwave and I've declared the portals by hand (Suppose I've written and exporter plugin...) Can anyone tell/point out tutorials about this one? Do I lack RVS knowledge for this? Thanks, Galip
