You probably want WM_PARENTNOTIFY. Check LOWORD(wParam) for WM_CREATE, that should tell you when the child was created successfully. There are also several other messages you can watch for, as described on the MSDN page linked.

Keep in mind though that not all child controls send this message - particularly not in dialogs. See the documentation for details.
