What do you have to learn to get involved in the design/use of things like cryptography / firewalls / antivirus / antimalware etc? I'm interested in that sort of thing but I dont think most CS degrees(bachelors) even focus on things like this so I was wondering where would you learn something like this? Also if anyone has any book recommendations feel free to post them.

The things you mention are all very different things. What is it that specifically interests you about the things you mentioned?

I work in the security industry. Access Control to be precise. This occasionally involves encryption etc.
I'd say just be very good at programming in general, and study cryptography for a thesis or something if you really want to. The web is an excellent tool, especially [google]. Using google you should be able to find whatever you need to learn about various forms of encryption.
