16-bit float rendering target

I am rendering to a 16-bit floating point render target. My pixel shader is throwing an error that I must return a 4D color value. However, I want to return a 1D 16-bit value. How does that work? Do I just stick the 16-bit value I want to return as the first component of the 4D value?
