texture mapping

Hi, i am a newbie in opengl programming. So here is sth. i really don't understand out of all the tutorials and books i ve read about it. I once found sth on the net, which solved my problem but i don't find it anymore. How the f*** do i map a ckeck board texture onto a sphere ? Can smbd tell me a link, text or what ever where this is described ? thnx a lot

thnx, but i was looking for sth else.
that's what i figured out:

quadratic = gluNewQuadric();
gluQuadricNormals(quadratic, GLU_SMOOTH);
gluQuadricTexture(quadratic, GL_TRUE);

glBindTexture(GL_TEXTURE_2D, texture[0]);
gluSphere(quadratic, 0.5f, 32, 32);

this maps texture[0] onto the sphere :-)
