collision detection

Hello, I would like to implement collision detection into my engine. How can I find out which polygons of my area I have to check. For example there are 3000 polygons around the player. Do I really have to check every polygon of these 3000 if they are touching the player or is there a possibility to decrease the number of polygons I have to check? I know it sounds a little bit confusing but perhaps there''s somebody who can help me? Or does anybody know a good site about collision detection?
