d3d8 vs d3d8x

what''s the difference between d3d8 and d3d8x? i did my first triangle from d3d (dx7) because i don''t know what the hell is d3dx and now i''m seeing it again in dx8.

D3D is the core graphical functionality of DirectX. D3DX is a sort of layer on top of that, with loads of helper functions and premade wrappers. You don''t need to use D3DX at all, but it certainly can help if, for example, you don''t want to write your own .TGA image file loader, or to write your own mesh builder.
