Picking/3d selection

I'm implementing picking support in my 3d engine and I have a question. Is it not better to represent the picking ray as a line segment rather than a ray (position and direction)? The line segment would be the ray clipped by the far plane. If you use a BVH you minimize the number of nodes you have to traverse when checking for picking ray intersections. Is there any drawbacks I'm unaware of?
