SSE2 and DirectX

Yes, D3DX is heavily optimized for the various instruction sets. IIRC, Intel/AMD are involved in writing parts of the implementation.

If you stick the debug runtimes on, maximum output, you should see an (INFO) message from D3DX telling you which version it's using (e.g. SSE2 or 3DNow)..
