Vermont or Massachusetts

Probably in three years I plan to move from Texas to New England. I know that real estate prices in Boston, MA in outrageously high. So the question is which state from New England area is relatively inexpensive to live and run gamedev business (and what city, to be closer to Boston city :) ?
I live in Boston doing development...
Pay about $600/month to share a 3 bedroom ($1745 total)...
MA as a whole is very expensive for real estate...
I'm assuming Vermont would be cheaper, but not exactly sure.

I can't be sharing room cos I have my family with me. Do you know price range for houses outside metro area? Water/gas/electric/phone/DSL internet bills? What a average salary for graphic designer in MA? What the prices on food?
