getting keyboard input:

alright, from a book on game programming, i learned that i could know what keys were hit by doing this:
if(KEYDOWN(VK_SPACE)){
   //do whatever you do when space is hit	
}
now i've found that this works for space, tab, and the 4 arrow keys. so my question is, how to i get it to work for other keys? i want to use ctrl and alt for my game, but typing in:
if(KEYDOWN(VK_ALT)){
   //do whatever you do when alt is hit	
}
doesn't seem to work. thank you for your time and help.
