Isometric Game Programming With Directx 7.0
I'm buying this book and I was wondering if it was worth the $10? I know Direct3D and Win32, and I've made several regular tile-based engines. I've been trying to get a isometric engine working and I got code from the_moo for rendering, but I can't seem to get objects moving around the map correctly and such. I know the book is written in DirectDraw (which, from what I hear, is covered in the first 250 some pages), but this doesn't really matter since the actual rendering part I know how to do. My problem is the math and logic. Is there anybody here that has bought the book that would or would not recommend it?
Thanks!

hey programmer16,
first off: whats the book that you're planning on getting? - you didnt mention the name of it [wink]
second: what is it that you're having trouble with exactly? i may be able to help out again seeing as ive almost completed my engine now.
ill get back to you after i finish work tonight if you let us know some more details.
till then,

The name of the post is the name of the book (sorry about that.)
I've got your rendering code and that works great, but I'm having problems moving characters properly. When I'm moving from a lower level to an upper level, the movement seems really stiff (and its not because I'm not animating.) And then there is that fact that my mouse code doesn't seem to work right. I don't have the code at hand ATM because I've dissected and I'm adding it to my engine. Once I have the code and I've figured out where my problem lies I'll post back out here.
Thanks!

I have it and consider it a good book. For $10 you can't really go wrong (unless you're young and without a job [grin]). In any event, it goes into great detail about the different kinds of iso and hex maps and does cover movement within them as well as mouse mapping. However, IIRC, it does not cover multi-level maps. Cheers.
Well, I'm doubting your seriousness there TANSTAAFL, but I bought it anyway. Hey, you can't go wrong for $10. Thanks for the input guys!
Edit: Yes, I know that you wrote the book.

Despite TANSTAAFL's self criticism on his old work, I think it is a good read. I only bought if for around that price too [grin]
I read half the book in one road trip sitting (minus 2 bathroom breaks).
I just couldn't put it down, that was the best DirectX coverage I had read up till that point.
And it was very easy for me to read. Prior to then, I usually would stare at pages for minutes at a time when things got heavy, but not once in that book.
PS: Geese, I keep seeing you everywhere now Programmer16 [smile]

sorry, maybe I'm al little bit stupid, but this book isn't available in the netherlands, is there a ebook version?
No, wouldn't recommend that book, not worth $10. Doesn't really teach you how to do things proper. Better to invest in som real programming books.
