OpenGL Pencil Sketch Rendering

Recently ive been pondering doing some pencil-sketch like rendering in Opengl. Im currently looking around at thesis papers and found some hopefuls but personaly I find most of them to be too damn longwinded. At the moment im open to any suggestions on how to do this.

You could also look at a modified glQuake 1.

They had several diffrent types of rendering, one of them was pencil sketch rendering.

It was called NPRQuake if I'm not mistaken.

It runs very well on my 9200SE (so just ps 1.4).

Just a bit of a random comment here but could you do a pixel shader which samples the 8 points surrounding a pixel and calculate wether it should be shaded with a weighted matrix - the same way you'd do edge testing?
