Making an object shiny

I created a sphere object (direct3d IM) and I want it to be shiny. I know I have to play with the material, specular or emissive colors, but I don''t know exactly how. I want it to save its color, and be sensitive to light (optional) but be shiny. Suggestions?

I think you want specular highlights. So what you must do is set the specular component of the light and material. Make the D3DRENDERSTATE_SPECULARENABLE true. And make sure you set the power component of the material, which controls the power of the highlights. You have to fiddle with that value to get it to look right.
