Oh darn. GDnet is a huge, *free* resource that hosts what, thousands of people and doesn't make anyone pay for their account. They provide free, very useful articles without even needing an account to access them. They put up with humongous amounts of crap posts in the lounge. They have dedicated and attentive moderators. And those assholes want to put in LINKS WITH ADVERTISEMENTS??? I dont' care if I can disable them with two mouseclicks! I don't care if they obviously need the money to run the site! I don't care if the ads only pop up if you hover over them, and they will possibly be interesting! I want everything my way, and that means NO text ads!!!!
Really, staff. Do what you need to do - I don't have any right to complain, and neither does anyone else on the site, since the ones who aren't freeloading (GDnet+) don't have to see the ads anyways.
[EDIT] And I don't have any problems with firefox, either.

These things are perfectly acceptable on the site. I don't click on them as I've had alot of experience with sites offering them as ads.
If it helps the site, then fine. They don't detract and the sites links are different so it doesn't matter.
I was looking at them for my site, but i dont get enough hits.
Income + non-obtrusive = fun for the whole family.

As long as this stuff remains at a sensible level, it's OK with me. Right now, I see one green link on the index page and that link isn't even on the first screen, which is OK. As soon as it gets too much, the ads get bad or the ad-server gets overloaded and blocks the whole page, the domain will go into my nameserver config as "no A record" and join the smileys and Windows-UI ads there.
I see this as some kind of balance: as long as the ads aren't annoying enough to make me reconfigure my nameserver, they can stay. After they've been annoying two or three times, the whole domain gets blocked forever. The list of culprits is amazingly short, filtering seven domains improved my surfing experience a lot.

I have found them very annoying over the last year as some of the sites I used have started to overzealously deploy this method, along with interstitials, and way too much flash. I don't use those sites much anymore.
Are top and side banners so undsireable now? I actually look at, and often visit the sites from these banners. They are off to the side, like advertising should be, and they let me browse them at my leisure. Just like the ads in any newspaper or magazine.
I really hate ads that try to distract me from the content I'm reading, and the green coloured text that shows up on the words is mentally distracting, and breaks up the text. They aren't the worst thing in the world, but I have a strong dislike for them. I'm not writing this as a complaint. I wouldn't have started a thread over this, as it's your site and you can advertise how you want on it, and I appreciate the information I've gotten from this place.
I think there are better ways to advertise to this crowd, as in sponsoring coding contests with prizes, or sponsoring articles series. Such as nVidia or ATI sponsored articles on some advances coding techniques on their 3d hardware. They would function as permanent ads that can showcase their product's features, give the reader something usefull and show the companies in a positive light.
I'm sure a gamespace sponsored article series targetted to this crowd on how to get the most out of the program for the purposes most of us would use it for would translate into more buys then them trying to hijack words on the front page. Show and tell us how feature x or feature y is well thought out and was designed to make our workflow easier, being designed for our indy coding needs.

The Firefox stall is a legitimate concern. However, I just tried loading 30 pages simultaneously in Firefox and didn't experience even a slight stall. I wonder if this is version-dependent (I'm running 1.0.4).
I don't think it is, it slightly stalls in my firefox and im running 1.0.4, perhaps it depends on something else?
I'm okay with the links as long as I can still block them the way I do now. I'm never going to be interested in anything they offer anyway. Ads just annoy me (I adblock all of them).
Wow, I just got hit with one on the forum list just now. Logged in and everything too. Amusingly it's the same one that doodle posted.
For those who have whined about it being slow with Linux and Firefox, let me say that the appearing of the ad is a little laggy, but it doesn't slow everything else with it.

Yeah, I've seen a few today, seems to be a problem with signing in from multiple machines, it's fine on my home machine.
I'm still concerned about these things altering the content of my personal developer journal. That's just NOT cool. It's like someone going in to your personal journal and underlining a bunch of words that you didn't intend to stress.
So if you still don't understand then listen up... KEEP THEM OUT OF THE JOURNALS!!! [flaming]

Yeah even logged in(so much for GDNet+ not seeing them) and with AdBlock I can still see the damn things.
